GOLD – Malayalam Movie

Gold is a 2022 Indian malayalam-language crime thriller comedy movie written, directed, and edited by Alphonse Puthren. It is co-produced by Supriya Menon of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames. The movie stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara, with Mallika Sukumaran, Shammi Thilakan, and others in supporting roles.

Puthren also worked on the film’s stunt choreography, visual effects, color grading, and animated titles, in addition to writing, editing, and directing it. It’s his first movie as a director in seven years, since Premam (2015). The main shooting of Gold Movie started in September 2021 and completed in June 2022.

Gold Movie Release

The Gold film was supposed to release in theatres globally during Onam in September 2022, but delays in post-production caused its release to be postponed. Gold Movie finally came out on December 1, 2022, to mixed reviews from critics, and it was a box-office bomb.

Originally, the Gold film was set to be released in theaters on September 8, 2022, to coincide with Onam. In Tamil Nadu, the film’s Tamil and Malayalam versions were distributed by Subbiah Shanmughan of SSI Productions.

The film “GOLD”, which has a runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes, was censored on November 28, 2022. With that, the release date of December 1, 2022 was announced. Tamil dubbed version of Gold Movie was released only a few days later, on 2 December 2022, due to dubbing and censoring delays.

Amazon Prime Video purchased the film’s digital rights, while Sun TV Network owned the satellite rights.

Gold Film Plot

S Kunjan, a mobile shop owner, buys a new car for his marriage to Radha. Joshi and his mother find a pickup with portable speakers on delivery day. Busy police investigate Joshi’s complaint slowly. Next morning, Joshi discovers the truck’s small boxes are gold bars painted as speakers. Joshi buys a gold boiler and melts one speaker. Police leave the truck due to space barriers.

Later, Joshi sells one gold bar to “Gold” Musthafa for 45 lakhs and buys 20 real portable speakers to replace them.

Later, it is revealed that the gold was intended as dowry for Sumangli Unnikrishnan, daughter of the shopping complex owner who owns Joshi’s mobile shop, and “Idea” Shaji’s son, Suneesh. Boss Freddy’s gang attacked Unnikrishnan’s associate Usman as he decided to drive to deliver the gold. Usman escaped and parked the truck in Joshi’s empty parking.

After Interval

Joshi beats Boss Freddy’s men for stealing the truck. Sumangali, Unnikrishnan, and Usman fail to steal gold from the truck. Shaji accidentally told Radha’s parents that Suneesh will blow up the complex, canceling Joshi’s wedding. The police tell Joshi they’ll take the truck the next evening. After discovering Shaji and Suneesh only wanted the dowry and shopping complex, Unnikrishnan upholds Sumangali’s marriage.

Joshi buys 180 portable speakers with 20 time-shifted gold bars. He swaps 170 gold bars, leaving 10 in the truck. Sumangali is impressed when Baazi asks Joshi which phone to buy next. Six months later, Joshi tells CM Kalamassery Ajayan that he anonymously gave 85 crore of black money to a charity fund to build houses for the poor and give students laptops. “Gold” taxed 10%. Joshi’s 10 unchangeable gold bars are in the truck. Sumangali likes Joshi but isn’t sure about Gold.

Rajesh Murugesan, who usually works with Puthren, composed the soundtrack for the movie.
The distribution of the soundtrack is handled by Magic Frames Music. The song “Hands Up Zindagi” features a reprise of “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai” by Andaz (1971).

Gold Malayalam Movie Review

• Princy Alexander of Onmanorama praised the film for its representation of the inner psyche of a man’s desire for luxuries. If ‘Premam’ was a love story and ‘Neram’ focused on a man’s relationship with time, then ‘Gold’ does the film’s theme justice.

• The Indian Express’ Manoj Kumar. R gave 3 stars and wrote “Alphonse Puthren films: how do you like them? by being present. You may be disappointed if you expect the story to go elsewhere. You’ll be entertained if you enjoy the film’s current offering. Like life, Alphonse’s films are about the journey, not the destination.”

• OTTplay gave the film three stars and wrote, “The highlight of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold, right from its outset, is its making; Alphonse has carefully conceived and crafted each of the film’s scenes that blends with Rajesh Murugesan’s thundering music.”

• Janani. K of India Today gave 2 out of 5 stars and called Alphonse’s script “memory – based and model” and “unengaging,” but she called Prithviraj the film’s “soul.”

• “Despite its flaws, Gold’s first half is entertaining,” wrote Anna M. M. Vetticad in a 2/5 Firstpost review. Post-interval drop is rapid. Complexion writing can’t be hidden by catchy music, production polish, or star power. After all, gold plating is plating.”
